Unit 21 19. Analysing results-Survey

Q1:How old are you?
Due to the group of people i asked, the majority of responses to this question was 16-18, as i only asked friends, and family members that fitted the age range of the given brief.

Q2:How often do you watch thriller movies? From the results in these answers, it is clear that the majority of people that i asked watch thriller movies less frequently rather than more frequently. From this i can infer that the 16-18 age range (the majority of people i asked) clearly dont have a huge amount of interest in the thriller genre, so in order for me to get them to want to watch mine, i will have to create an opening which will easily grasp their attention.

Q3:What thriller movies have you watched?
From the answers given from question 3, i can infer that despite the age group of the survey not as a whole being interested in the thriller genre, they have watched a few popular thriller films. Some answers contain the same films as other answers eg Get out, Taken, The dark knight, and from these it allows me to get a better understanding of what sub genre(s) of thriller the age group actually enjoys, as this way i can create an opening with one of these sub genres and as a result the younger audience will be much more engaged in the opening and will want to see the full film.

Question 4:What did you enjoy/like about the movies? The same ideology applies for question 4 as it does with question 3, as many of the responses included the same answers as one another stating "The adrenaline that the movie gave me whilst watching it" and "The thrill and excitement of whats going to happen next". This again helps me with creating an idea of what it is the audience enjoys, which from these answers in clearly the suspense build-up throughout the movies, i can use this information to create a suspense-filled opening which grasps the audiences attention and leaves a mark in their thoughts of the film, as this way it will make them want to see the full movie far more.

Question 5:Which one of the following themes
would you enjoy the most in a thriller movie?

The clear theme that the people taking the survey took a liking to was psychological thriller, which is most likely because this sub-genre is the one that easily links slightly to the horror genre, which a younger audience has took a very large interest in after recent years. Yet again i can use this information to help me create an opening specifically to what the audience takes a liking to, and stop me from making a mistake in choosing the sub-genre and selecting legal or crime, as they are clearly unpopular among st a younger audience (16-18).

Question 6:Why did you select the theme that
you chose?

This question is quite significant in the understanding behind the reasoning as to why the person had selected what they selected in the previous question, this helps immensely as it allows me to gain an understanding of actually why the person enjoys the specific theme the most, which will then allow me to implement this in my own thriller opening depending on whether the answers to the question relate or not, either way it provides me an understanding into why the person enjoys the specific sub genre.

Question 7:What would you look for in a
psychological thriller film? Eg Gone girl,
Sixth sense

The reasoning behind me creating this question was based off of my own initial idea, as in my idea i had planned for one to have the sub genre of psychological, which then later was decided as a group that this idea would be our final idea with slight adjustments. The answers to the question helps me gain an understanding of what the audience actually looks for in a psychological thriller film, as i will be able to look through the responses as meet the audiences wishes in what they look for in the film. However as i am only creating n opening for a thriller film, this information may not be as useful if i were to create a full thriller film.

Question 8:What key features do you think
should be included in an opening for a thriller
film?

From the answers given for this question its clear that people took favor to the option of tension building, however i believe that this was going to be the more favorable of the answers due to the answers people gave in question 4 "The adrenaline the movie gave me whilst watching it". As a whole it is clear that tension building plays a  vital role gaining an audience around a thriller film, so with our opening i will most likely add some sort of additional tension building to engage the audience of my thriller.
Question 9:What do you look for in the main
character of a thriller film?

With the answers given for this question, it is clear that there are two popular results, intelligence and inspirational, evidently this shows that people clearly enjoy a film with a strong protagonist, rather than a protagonist who is weak, as only four respondents answered with option four, fearful. I now can use this to create an intelligent or inspirational protagonist, as in the results of the survey it is clear the majority of the audience enjoys a protagonist who is intelligent or inspirational.

Question 10:What do you look for in the bad guy/villain in a thriller?
The respondents to the survey voted psychotic to the most popular answer in what they personally look for in a villain of a thriller movie, from this i can infer the idea that people prefer psychotic in a villain of a thriller, which then allows me to implement this in my own thriller, as from the answers this is what the audience looks for in a villain of a thriller film.
