Unit 21 6. Response to the Client Brief

Explanation of demographics

From reading the client brief that i have been provided, my opening is clearly stated to be aimed towards the audience of 16-24 year olds, and in more recent years the younger audience of consumers like this audience have become particularly interested and engaged in the horror genre. Despite Thriller and Horror being two separate genres, thriller often shares similar conventions to a typical horror film, however few sub-genres actually use these conventions, it is often the supernatural or psychological thrillers that successfully use this convention, and if i were to use this within my own thriller opening it would most certainly appeal to the younger audience i have been tasked to appeal to. However because this sort of convention is taken from an entirely separate genre it is quite possible that it will be very difficult to successfully replicate this convention in my own thriller, and if done incorrectly the audience would be overall displeased with the final product that i have produced.

Conventions

One key thriller convention that i may include in my own thriller opening may be a lot of low key lighting, as this creates a sense of mystery and suspense that most thrillers have and need to make them a part of the thriller genre. I also may include the use of shadows in the opening for my thriller as this again is typically used in thrillers to create mystery and an enigma around who the person or character is behind the shadow. These conventions may be included in my opening by using a lot of natural lighting in the recording, as from a specific time these conventions will be far easier to implement into my opening rather than other times of the day.

Medium

The medium i am working on is film, as stated in the scenario, thriller chiller is looking for "an original, new thriller movie". The text i will be creating for thriller chiller will be a short, snippet of the opening to my thriller movie, this is also stated in the scenario "we are looking for the first two minutes...as a taster to screen at our festival next year." My current idea of a thriller would most likely fit in with psychological thriller/Detective thriller.

Industry Requirements

The institution that i am making my thriller for is the British Broadcasting Film Classification, (BBFC), as this is the regulatory board that regulates films and what age they are regulated to. BBFC has its own website, so to certify and check whether my thriller opening is suitable to actually be published, then i will have to make sure it follows the guidelines provided on their website. An advantage of working with this institution is that it will be correctly regulated to the correct standards, most likely creating very little controversy around it. A disadvantage however may include that if it were to be regulated poorly, it could result in a large controversy and possibly backlash on my media product. One text i will have to include in the opening will be the age rating itself, so consumers are completely aware of the correct age they must be to attend the film.
